Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document  14:                  Change of course title and description of ENVR 341;

                                                Adding BIOL 342 and cross listing it with ENVR 341

Effective Date: Fall 2008

1.  Delete:  On page 130, the entry for ENVR 341:

341       Aquatic Ecosystems and Wetlands (4)

Structural and functional characteristics of freshwater and marine ecosystems and their associated wetlands; one extended coastal field trip. Prerequisite: ENVR 241. Odd years Spring.

Add:     On page 130, in place of deleted entry:

341      Wetland Ecology  (BIOL 342) (4)

An introduction to the ecology of freshwater wetland ecosystems.  Topics include hydrology, biogeochemistry, plant and animal communities, ecosystem development, and classification and management of wetlands. One or more required weekend field trips. Prerequisite: ENVR 241. Odd years Fall.

Impact: No significant impact.  Extended field trips were already required for the course.  The course is designed as an advanced ecology course for Environmental Studies majors but is cross-listed as an ecology course for Biology majors. Existing ENVR faculty have the expertise to teach the course.

Rationale: The course is given a new title and description to accurately reflect course content. The focus will be on freshwater wetlands, hence the need to change the current course description that includes marine ecosystems.

2.  Add:     On page 79, new course, BIOL 342:

342       Wetland Ecology (ENVR 341) (4)

An introduction to the ecology of freshwater wetland ecosystems.  Topics include hydrology, biogeochemistry, plant and animal communities, ecosystem development, and classification and management of wetlands. One or more required weekend field trips. Prerequisite: BIOL 115 or ENVR 241. Odd years Fall.

3.  Delete:  On page 76, in the list of courses under Concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology:

three courses from BIOL 321, 331-337, 340 or 348, 350, 351, 356, 360, 365, or ENVR 350, 360, 384;

Add:   On page 76, in place of deleted entry:

three courses from BIOL 321, 331-337, 340 or 348, 342, 350, 351, 356, 360, 365, or ENVR 341, 350, 360, 384;

Impact: No significant impact. Cross-listing the course gives Biology majors another elective course for their major.

Rationale: The course content is applicable to Biology students completing an Ecology concentration. It provides an additional course option for all Biology majors.
