Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 10:                   Add new courses, LANG 368 and 466 to list of available courses for the Creative Writing minor;

                                                Add an application to the process for declaring a minor in Creative Writing

Effective Date:  Fall 2008

1.  Delete:   On pg. 170, under the heading, Minor in Creative Writing:

18 hours in Literature and Language courses: LIT 241, 6 hours selected from LIT 321, 322, 323, 324; 9 additional hours selected from LANG 353, 361, 363, 365, 366, 367, 461, 463, 465 (at least 3 of these hours must be at the 400 level).

Add:     On pg. 170, in place of deleted entry:

18 hours in Literature and Language courses: LIT 241, 6 hours selected from LIT 321, 322, 323, 324; 9 additional hours selected from LANG 353, 361, 363, 365, 366, 367, 368, 461, 463, 465, or 466. At least 3 of these hours must be at the 400-level. Students wanting to minor in Creative Writing should follow the application procedures listed under Declaration of Major in Literature and Language.

Impact: The proposed changes will have minimal impact on departmental resources. The only impact will be on the three members of the faculty chosen each year to review applications to the creative writing concentration.

Rationale: The proposed changes will help us maintain high standards for the creative writing program.  They will signal to prospective students that the study of creative writing is rigorous and demanding.  They should help all students make a more informed decision about whether to pursue the concentration in creative writing.  They will also give faculty an opportunity to turn away students who show neither the discipline nor the talent necessary to pursue the study of creative writing at the university-level.
