Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 50:                                           Adding Prerequisite to Philosophy 255

Effective Date: Fall 2008

1.         Delete:  On page 215, the title and course description for Philosophy 255

255 Medieval Philosophy (3)

An historical survey of philosophies from Christian, Islamic and Jewish writers from 350 C.E. to the 1600s. Spring.

Add:     On page 215, in place of deleted entry:

255 Medieval Philosophy (3)

An historical survey of philosophies from Christian, Muslin and Jewish writers from 350 C.E. to the 1600s. Prerequisite: PHIL: 250; or permission of instructor.  Spring.

Impact:

A possible decline in the number of non-majors taking Philosophy 255.

Rationale:

The proposed change mere adds the prerequisite of the course, Ancient Philosophy.  Because medieval Christian, Muslim and Jewish thinkers drew so heavily on the works of Plato and Aristotle, a formal course in Ancient Philosophy or an awareness of the ideas of Plato and Aristotle would help student learning in the medieval philosophy course.
