The Master of Liberal Arts degree is designed around the theme “The Human Condition.” The program explores human nature, human values and the quality of human life. The theme integrates studies ranging from the humanities and the arts to the natural and social sciences.

Add:           On page 192, in place of deleted entry:

The Master of Liberal Arts degree is designed around the theme “The Human Condition.”  The program explores human nature, human values and the quality of human life. The theme integrates studies ranging from the humanities and the arts to the natural and social sciences. The program offers three areas of study whereby students may focus their scholarly and creative energies. The areas are Humanities and Creative Writing, Globalization Past and Present, and Science and Human Values.

Impact Statement:  Students will now have the option of choosing an area of study in which to focus.

Rationale:  The new focus areas will allow students the option of taking up to five courses in one of the new topic areas, taking advantage of faculty expertise in creative writing, issues dealing with globalization, and climate and society.

2.  Delete:         On page 193, under Progress, the first sentence:

It is expected that a student will need no more than 7 years to complete the MLA degree.

Add:           On page 193, in place of deleted entry:

It is expected that a student will need no more than 5 years to complete the MLA degree.

Impact Statement:  Students will be expected to complete the degree in no more than 5 years. A student taking one course per semester (excluding summer) would be able to complete the MLA Program in 5 years.

Rationale:  The 5-year limit for graduation is in line with national standards. We need students to move through the program in a more efficient manner. Too many MLA students leave the program for extended periods.
